1. A HaSS classroom opportunity from HAA: Faces and Places Competition (under development and coming your way in July 2026). The information below is in draft form, awaiting final approval from the HAA Council.

Real people and places contain some of the most incredible, exciting, and amazing stories and information. HAA considers that writing about local people and places, encourages students to research and explore their local area. Storytelling gives us a way to imagine and visualise people of the past and the present. This competition is an opportunity for primary students to show their knowledge and understanding of history, geography, civics and citizenship and economics and business, using the local area as the context for HaSS learning.
Purpose of the competition: To promote awareness of an individual, group, organisation or features of the place a student or their school is situated.
Specific competition task to be developed in the first half of 2025.
2. Department for Education HaSS programs

Premier’s Anzac Spirit School Prize
Since 2007, the Department for Education has conducted programs to promote and support the teaching of HaSS in South Australian schools. These programs have taken the form of student competitions in the areas of history (World War 1 and 2), civics and citizenship, and the future. This website will provide updates on these programs as things are released every year. For 2025, the Eden Prize has been launched and a workshop is being offered to support entries in the Premiers Anzac Spirit School Prize. Here is some information on these opportunities for HaSS students and teachers from the manager of the Ha SS projects in the Department for Education, Aaron Harrison (aaron.harrison2@sa.gov.au). When you email Aaron make sure you ask to be put on the mailing list for his regular newsletter on HaSS opportunities in the department.

3. HAA members can join RGSSA at a reduced fee
HAA has negotiated a special arrangement with the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia (RGGSA) in regards to concessional membership of the RGSSA. HAA members can join this wonderful society for $65/year (normally $95). The following information may help you consider joining the RGSSA via this generous offer.
From the RGSSA to HAA members:
The RGSSA wishes to invite HAA members to join the RGSSA at a significantly discounted concessional membership rate.
RGSSA includes amongst its members some of the most distinguished geography-educators in Australia and as you know the Society is an enduring and staunch advocate of South Australian HASS teaching, teachers, and students. This is manifest through, for example, the:
- work of our Education Committee which is currently working with the Department for Education to contextualise – and improve – the Australian HaSS curriculum for South Australian schools and students.
- SA Geographers’ Fieldwork Awards for students in Years 7-12.
- John Lewis Medal for excellence in secondary school Geography (SACE stage 2 Geography).
- Alaric Maude Medal for excellence in secondary school Geography (IB Geography [Higher Level]).
We believe the RGSSA can offer valuable resources, benefits, and support to HaSS geography teachers in South Australia – and we hope to extend these in the future. At present these benefits include:
- Belonging to, and sharing expertise and experiences with, a friendly network of likeminded people, passionate about geography, history and HaSS more broadly, and dedicated to the multiple scientific, educational, and community objectives of the Society.
- Superior access to the most significant collection of rare historical-geography books and manuscripts in Australia located in one of the world’s most beautiful libraries.
- Access to our program of regular lectures, exhibitions, trips and tours, Flinders Ranges and Barossa walks, and rare books discussions
- Opportunities to participate in the Society’s program of bespoke field trips and excursions.
- Discounted access to a diverse frequent program of fascinating guest lectures.

- Admission to one of the oldest learned societies for geography in the world.
- Full access to our flagship learned publication, South Australian Geographical Journal which, since its foundation in 1885 as the Society’s Proceedings, is both Australia’s most longstanding scholarly periodical devoted exclusively to geography and one of the oldest geographical journals in the world.
- Scope to offer or receive research, fieldwork, and publications support.
- Becoming part of thriving state, national, and international communities of geographers.
- Influencing the contemporary character of geography and HaSS education through educational advocacy and practice.

We would like to add that RGSSA is one of the most longstanding geographical organisations in the world. Since 1885 we have fostered geographical discovery, research expeditions, educational programs, and public engagement initiatives. Over those 139 years we have also accumulated and cared for one of the most significant collections of rare geographical books and manuscripts in Australia. Our collections are located in the magnificent Mortlock Wing of the State Library of South Australia on North Terrace, Adelaide. It is in this building (Level 3) that we also have our Society’s Rooms and visitors are always welcome during our opening hours (Tues-Fri from 10am – 1pm).
