HAA Workshops

HAA Inc. conducts regular face-to-face, online workshops – supported by webinars for members.

Four professional learning events were conducted by HAA in 2024 and nine in 2025. In 2025, the workshops comprised 25 hours of professional learning for 265 HaSS educators in South Australia.

HAA Professional Learning in 2025 

The HAA Professional Learning Tribrid programme (face-to-face, online and webinars) was supported by a 2025 Educators SA and Credit Union SA Grants. The programme involved nine face-to-face workshops (four being also online) and the production of five 40 minute podcasts associated with the workshops. 

Here are brief summaries and some photographs from the workshops in 2025.

1. The Story of women in HaSS learning workshop was conducted online and face-to-face from 4.30 – 6.00pm at St Mary’s College. In collaboration with the Women’s Studies Teachers Association of South Australia, the workshop explored women’s studies in the HaSS curriculum and classroom. A resource will be launched in the near future relating to this workshop.  

 
 

2. Teaching to engage: Creative teaching pedagogy in HASS. 

Our March workshop was conducted as part of the HaSS SA Conference  on Saturday 15 March, 2025. The workshop profiled HAA’s Creative teaching resource that provides guidance and practical ideas for teachers wanting to develop more engaging and creative ways to deliver the HASS curriculum. Participants had the opportunity to participate in some of the creative teaching activities and  received a creative teaching resource using coloured archival photographs.  

3. A conversation on-the-move with Keith Conlon on South Australian political and social history and the potential for engaging and relevant HaSS excursions to Adelaide City

A conversation on-the-move with the wonderful Mr South Australia, Keith Conlon, in Adelaide City. Keith told stories as he explored the social and political history of South Australia in the 19th Century and early 20th Century. The on-the-move conversation provided many ideas on what can be done on a HaSS excursion into Adelaide City.

4. Let’s have a vote!  

Was conducted on Wednesday 16 April at the South Australian Parliament House. The focus was the place of Civics and Electoral Education in HaSS. The workshop was conducted by Paula Hensing from the Electoral Commission SA.

5. The Inspiring learning in HaSS through Creative teaching with Evan Polymeneas was conducted on 18 June between 4.30-7.00 at the Education Support Hub at Hindmarsh.  Participants heard about creative teaching from Evan Polymeneas (Department for Education). Evan focussed on applying conceptual modelling and connecting BIG and IMPORTANT IDEAS. Evan was a teacher at Salisbury High School for many years and one of the writers of the Department for Education HaSS resources and SA Curriculum: HaSS.
 

6. Artful Citizenship

In collaboration with the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Parliament of South Australia. A day of thought-provoking professional learning exploring how to teach Civics & Citizenship through the civics concepts and through visual arts was conducted on the 29th of August. In the morning the participants worked in Parliament House applying the concepts to civics learning and in the afternoon they explored the use of the civics concepts within the Gallery’s permanent collection, and discussed how to blend visual arts with civics and citizenship in the classroom.  

7. On 10 October from 10.00am-1.00pm, HAA conducted the  Engaging with stories and artefacts for HaSS learning with the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia.

The workshop was at the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia (RGSSA) rooms in the Mortlock Library, North Terrace, Adelaide. During the workshop participants heard  the stories from the early years of European settlement in South Australia and viewed artefacts from the amazing collection of the RGSSA. The workshop  also involved designing engaging activities for visiting students, relating to the stories and artefacts shared. 

8. On 22 October, from 4.30-7.00pm the Using primary sources and excursion ideas with the Virtual War Memorial was conducted in Anzac House, Torrens Parade Ground. 

The workshop was a unique opportunity to experience authentic activities for students to be involved in as historical detectives, using the primary sources on the Virtual War Memorial site. The workshop also provided ideas on excursion activities in the War Memorial precinct of Adelaide.

9. On Saturday, the 15th of November from 10.00am–3.00pm HAA conducted the Practical mapping and fieldwork workshop with the Geography Teachers Association of SA.

Participants learnt about and experienced mapping and practical fieldwork skills on the Uni SA Magill Campus.

2024 HAA Professional Learning events

1.  An overview of the new South Australian Curriculum under development: 21 August, 5.00 – 6.00pm via Zoom. 

 

Presented by Tara Baron and Susie Jones, the HaSS Curriculum Managers from the Department for Education. Being the first HAA event, this session was free for all HaSS educators.

2. Connecting with Civics and Citizenship: 2 October from 2.00 – 4.30pm at the South Australian Parliament House: Natalie Badcock, Community Education officer at Parliament House conducted a session on how to engage students with civics and citizenship learning. Resources were provided at the workshop. 

 
 

3. Creative teaching in HaSS was conducted at the UniSA Magill campus on 30 October, 2024 from 5.00 – 7.00pm. 40 teachers participated in either the face-to-face or online format. A teacher panel of  outstanding HaSS educators from all the HaSS subject areas discussed creative teaching. All participants received a creative teaching resource that is now available for purchase at https://hassaa.org.au/haa-products/.

4. Mapping and practical fieldwork skills was conducted on 16 November from 9.00am-1.00pm on the Uni SA Magill Campus. This session provided an in-person learning experience in the field. The session was conducted in collaboration with the Geography Teachers Association of South Australia.  Members cost was $20 for teachers and $10 for pre-service educators. Non-members registration cost is $30. 365are
